About the Art:

This piece was inspired by my childhood and all the hair care products that we would try. Countless Sunday afternoons in the kitchen, sitting next to the stove, as my mom heated a straightening comb to straighten our hair. ‘Hold your ear,’ ‘sit up straight,’ ‘stop fidgeting,’ mom said often. And of course, there was the occasional pop of the brush when her words weren’t enough to make us listen.

Blue Magic hair care products were often used. While we disliked the process, we loved the outcome of smoother, more manageable hair and the hairstyles that it would help us obtain!

This original hangs in my office at Greater Cincinnati Water Works and many often comment that it is a self-portrait.

Fun fact:

The hair patterns were made using a combo of acrylic paint, dishwashing soap, and water. It is my favorite pattern to make.
